President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko confers the Special Award “Through Art to Peace and Mutual Understanding” on People’s Artist of the USSR Sofia Rotaru

Sofia Rotaru participated in the Vitebsk festival for the first time in 1993 in the gala concert of the masters of arts of Ukraine.

In 1997, she performed on stage of the Summer Amphitheatre in the jubilee program marking 25 years of her career.

Her solo concerts were held in 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2009.

Sofia Rotaru took part in the gala concerts of the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the festival, the gala concerts of the masters of arts of Ukraine.

In 2007, she received “Through Art to Peace and Mutual Understanding” special award of the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and a Star on the Walk of Fame in Vitebsk.

Sofia Rotaru was born on 7 August 1947 in Marshintsy of the Chernovtsy Region (Ukraine). She graduated from choir and conducting department of the Chernovtsy Musical College (1968) and the Chisinau State Institute named after G.Musicesku (1974).

Sofia Rotaru was a soloist of the Chernovtsy Regional Philharmonic Society and the Crimea State Philharmonic Society.

In 1964, she debuted on stage of the State Kremlin Palace (Moscow).

In 1971, she appeared in the movie “Chervona Ruta” and performed the songs by composer V. Ivasyuk. She also collaborated with such prominent songwriters as A. Babadzhanyan, R. Pauls, O. Feltsman, D. Tuhmanov, Yu. Saulsky, A. Pahmutova and others.

Sofia Rotaru was the first to perform the songs by E. Martynov “Swan Fidelity” (lyrics: A. Dementiev),”Blossoming Apples” (lyrics: E. Martynov) and “Ballad About Mother” (lyrics: A.Dementiev).

She has performed over 500 songs. Many of them have become classical songs of the Soviet and Ukrainian stage. Rotaru sings in Ukrainian, Russian, Moldavian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Polish, German, Italian, Spanish and English.Her concerts have been held in the United States, Asia, Europe, and Australia.

She gave solo shows “Sofia Rotaru Invites You” (1985), “Flowers of Sofia Rotaru” (1992), “Sofia Rotaru’s Concert in Olympiysky” (1995), “Love Me” (1998), “My Life Is My Love” (2001), “I Still Love You” (2003), “Jubilee Concert” (2007), “Time to Love” (2011).

The singer is the First Prize winner of the IX World Festival of Youth and Students(Sofia, Bulgaria, 1968), the international contests “Golden Orpheus” (Sofia, Bulgaria, 1973), “Amber Nightingale” (Sopot, Poland, 1974).

Sofia Rotaru has numerous awards and prizes including N. Ostrovsky Award (1976), Lenin Komsomol Prize (1978), “Miss Estrada-89”, “Song Vernissage” Honorary Prize of the President of Ukraine for outstanding personal contribution to the development of the variety art (1997, Kiev), “Ovation” Prize (1996, 2000, 2008), All-Ukrainian Award in music and mass entertainments “Golden Firebird-99”, “Prometheus-prestige” Prize (2000).

There are her Stars at the Concert Hall “Yubileiny” (Yalta, 1996) and “Zhovtnevy Palace” (Kiev, 2000).

In 2000, the Supreme Academic Council of Ukraine recognized her as the best Ukrainian pop singer of the 20th century.

Sofia Rotaru is the Honorary Citizen of Yalta and Chernovtsy. She is the holder of the Order of “Badge of Honour” (1980), Order of Friendship of Peoples (1985), “Merits for the Fatherland” (2002), Order of the Republic of Moldova (1997), Order of “Badge of Honour” (Ukraine, 2002), Order of Nicholas Miracle Maker(1998), Order of Princess Olga of I and III Degree (2002, 1999).
